More and more people are replacing their time spent watching TV watching online videos. Just recently the whole social media have evolved from text-based to image-based.

With all that said I want to make it clear to you that videos are the future of media. It‘s already huge and it keeps growing at a rapid pace.

So, this guide is going to be all about how to ride this trend into profits. More specifically how to create an authoritative YouTube channel to position yourself to prosper from this trend.

Choosing Your Platform

Before you start shooting videos you want to choose your main platform, where you are going to host your videos.

For most people, this is going to be YouTube. Though there are many websites that you could use, nothing can compare to the amount of traffic YouTube can bring you.

So, 9 out of 10 times you would choose YouTube over any other video sharing site. Still, I want to give you a fair warning about YouTube.

Currently, there are a lot of people abusing the YouTube report function, which allows people to report abusive content. If a video gets a lot of reports it gets taken down and the channel owner gets a penalty. Three penalties and you‘re out.

In other words, you get banned and all your videos deleted. Now, you might be thinking that this won‘t apply to you because you aren‘t planning to upload abusive content.

That‘s nice to hear, but the problem is that there are people who report just about any video. There are even people that use bots to automatically report videos of their competition or what not.

So, when you get big you might get targeted by those people. Though I hope that this problem is going to be solved soon.

Am I saying not to use YouTube? Well, no, it is still the best platform to work with, but it shouldn‘t be your main hub, your only property that you own.

You don‘t want to rely your whole business on them. It all comes back to the principle of “don‘t build on rented land“, because the owner of the land can change the rules whenever he wants because it‘s his property.

If you got a little confused about this, don‘t worry. Keep reading and it will be clear how to prevent your whole business disappearing with your YouTube account.

Creating a YouTube Account

You chose to start your Youtube channel, you now need to set up your account. If you already have a Google account, then you‘re already halfway through.

Though I don‘t recommend using the same YouTube account that you regularly use because when you will “like” a video on YouTube it will show up in your channel. There are ways to turn all of those notifications off, but it‘s easier to just create a separate account.

Once you have the account created, you will need to think of a channel name. Make it related to what your videos are going to be about.

Then, you will need to set a channel cover, you can choose a random image or design your own cover with your branding. You will also need a profile picture. You should also fill out the about section with a short description of your channel and add up all your social media links.

I also recommend having your own website or preferably a blog and link to it from your channel. One more thing that you might want to set up is the main video, though featuring just a random video of yours works fine.

So, this is it for the whole account set up stuff, you now need to create videos.

Video Creation

A lot of people are afraid of being on camera, they worry how they are going to look, how they are going to sound, will people like their videos etc.

Now, I get it. Even to this day I don‘t completely enjoy my videos. I remember when I started doing videos I did screen captures with no sound, just text bubbles appearing when something needed explaining.

That‘s how my videos looked like and you can do those to, if you are afraid of being on camera. It didn‘t take me long to finally start shooting screencasts or powerpoint presentations with my voice.

Later I added my face at the corner of the videos and after that, I started feeling pretty comfortable being in front of the camera. So, start with what feels good for you and keep improving your presentation skills.

Some people recommend recording videos just for the sake of recording and don‘t upload them.

Personally, I try to record a video every single day, most of the videos I just delete right after recording, but if it goes well I upload it to my channel.

I‘m doing this to improve my presentation skills, to talk more freely, to lose my fear of cameras etc. I remember taking a long break without recording a single video for more than a month. When the time came to record I felt anxious to start recording, it was quite stressful.

To create videos you will need tools. The tools depend on the type of video you want to create. If you want to create good screen captures, then I recommend using Camtasia. It does cost a little bit of money.


If you want a free alternative you can check out CamStudio. For shooting regular videos you don‘t need expensive cameras. A simple webcam can work, sometimes those are built into laptops. If you are looking for better quality, then check out the camera of your smartphone, if it isn‘t five years old then the camera is going to be pretty good.


You might also want to use software for video editing. For this, I recommend Sony Vegas or Movie Studio, which is much cheaper.

Also, if you already have the Camtasia Studio you can use it for editing, but if you are looking for a free solution you can try out OpenShot or VSDC.

Optimizing Videos

Now, that you have a video shot you will need to upload it to YouTube, which is super easy to do. You click upload, find the video file, click okay and you‘re done.

Just by uploading your video you won‘t get a lot of views if any. You need to optimize your video for the search engines to find it.

Video Title

You want to have your main keyword in your title, if possible even twice.

Here are some examples:

It‘s best if the keyword phrase isn‘t split, but it‘s not always possible to do. I wouldn‘t sacrifice readability over optimization.


First thing in your description you want to put your video title. Yes, just copy paste it. After that it‘s a good idea to have a link to your website, squeeze page or whatever you promote to make money.

After you have those, you want to write several paragraphs about your video and make sure to use relevant keywords. The longer the description, the better.


You want to max out this space with relevant keywords. There‘s a limit to how many tags you can put and you want to reach it. I recommend using keyword tools like Keyword Planner or Ubbersuggest to come up with good keyword ideas.

Tags help YouTube determine what your video is about.


I recommend uploading your own high-quality thumbnail. It is very important because it will appear all over YouTube and if the image isn‘t good you will lose out on a lot of views.

Create Good Videos

The best optimization that you can do to your video is to make it good. It might sound kind of cheesy, but that‘s what the YouTube algorithm wants.

If your video is being watched from start to finish, then it will rank well. If people watch only the first few seconds and leave, then your video won‘t rank well.

YouTube is tracking how much time on average visitors spend watching your videos and ranks your videos based on that info.

So, definitely shooting better videos will rank you higher. Also, consider shooting shorter videos, because if you upload hour-long training sessions those likely aren‘t going to get a lot of views without you doing some marketing first.

I would estimate that it‘s best to do three to five-minute videos because if the video is longer it gets very hard to keep the audience watching.

Spreading Your Videos

After you have done the hard work of creating a video, you want it to be seen by as many people as possible, right? Well, then it‘s a good idea to share your video on other video platforms.

There is a ton of those, but manually submitting to all of them take a lot of time and the payoff won‘t be that great so, I recommend using OneLoad a free video distribution tool. You register, fill out the log in details of the sites you want to share your video on and OneLoad does the rest.

Of course, most of the views are going to happen on YouTube, but having your video on additional sites will get you more views. You might even want to manually submit your video to other video sites that OneLoad can’t submit, but be aware of what kind of content the websites accept.

Now, one problem is that most of the video sharing sites don‘t allow to have links in the descriptions as YouTube does.

So, you want to think strategically, if you want to benefit from those additional views that you‘ll be getting. You want to mention your website URL someplace in your video either in the introduction part or at the end as a call to action or maybe even do both.

Again, you need to realize that none of those websites are going to send you a lot of traffic, but it adds up because you are sharing your video on multiple sites.

Still, the payoff of this is quite low and it takes some time to do so, you might want to outsource this. On Fiverr, you can find people that will do it for just $5. Another way that I recommend to get more views for your video is to write a blog post and embed the video in it.

You can have the same content that you talked about in the video written down. So, this accomplishes two things: you are getting more views from your blog and you are also building your second property that you own – your blog.

If your YouTube channel got shot down, you would still have your blog.

Monetizing Your Videos

When it comes to monetizing your videos, there aren‘t too many options to choose from.

Firstly, the most obvious way is to become a YouTube partner, which enables you to make an income from the ads shown on your videos. That alone can bring you a steady income if you generate a lot of views, but becoming a partner isn’t that easy.

Your account needs to be at a very good standing and a major problem can be that YouTube won‘t allow making money from their ads in some countries.

So, if that‘s you don‘t worry too much. There are other partnership programs available, but to get accepted you need huge amounts of views.

This is what’s going to ensure that at an unlikely event of losing your YouTube channel you wouldn’t lose your business and your whole income. To build a list you will need an autoresponder. I recommend either MediaMail, Aweber or GetResponse.

Once you have your autoresponder set-up, you will need a squeeze page to capture leads. Explaining everything in detail would be beyond the scope of this book. You will need to research the topic of list building yourself. All you need to know is that you will be promoting your squeeze page URL in your videos to get leads.

Secondly, I recommend checking out Facebook ads. I‘m guessing it will give you better results than Google Ads. You‘re likely not going to get a positive ROI from these campaigns, but you should look at them as an investment. They will help you gain momentum and grow your channel faster.
